Jersey, the Channel Islands Collection

Maps, photographs, books, artworks and historical objects reflecting generations of the Hellyer family's connection to Jersey, from the family's early history on the island to the present day. The collection includes inherited family possessions, personal acquisitions and objects documenting Jersey's rich cultural and historical heritage.

About this Collection

Jersey has been part of the Hellyer family's history for generations. Arthur Lee Hellyer served as States Auditor from 1908 to 1920, succeeded by his younger brother, Ernest Palmer Hellyer MBE. In 1933, Ernest built Rockwood in a former slate quarry at Mont Cochon, overlooking St Aubin's Bay. His widow, Ellina, bequeathed the house to their nephew, Arthur George Lee Hellyer, in 1961. Rockwood became a cherished family home where Peter spent his childhood summers, a tradition continued by his children.

The collection also includes objects relating to Jersey's experience during the German occupation of 1940–1945, among them a radio of a type whose possession was prohibited under occupation restrictions. These pieces offer a tangible connection to one of the most significant periods in the island's modern history, alongside other objects reflecting everyday life across different generations.
